Winter Camping Trip 2003
Saturday, Dec. 27th - Monday, Dec. 29th
As usual, the winter camping trip this year will be between Boxing Day and New
Year's Eve. All Senior members are invited! Call Jon Hickman (739-1964) if
you're interested or have any questions.
Recommended equipment:
- a flashlight
- matches
- a compass
- a plastic whistle; metal will freeze to your lips
- a mattress
- a very warm sleeping bag (You want something that will keep you
warm if the temperature drops to -20 ºC or below. Sleeping bags this
effective can be expensive, however, so combining a couple of sleeping bags
and sleeping in your snowsuit's can also work.)
- Clothing:
- polypropylene long underwear and undershirt (These will not only
help to keep you warm, but will also wick away sweat from your
skin.)
- several pairs of warm wool socks
- long-sleeved shirts and pants: avoid cotton if possible, it
becomes stiff in the cold and doesn't insulate well when damp.
Wool is a good choice, but even 50% polyester sweat-pants are
better than jeans.
- good winter boots
- a toque and a couple of pairs of gloves; it's nice to have an
extra pair to wear while drying your first by the fire.
- a non-breakable bowl and cup
- a fork, knife, and spoon
- plenty of water (we always have the option of boiling snow, but its
nice to have a ready supply)
- snowshoes or skis (depending on how much snow there is)
Food, rides, and tents are being arranged. Call Jon at 739-1964 if you have
any questions or concerns.
